Choosing between two similar LED brands

If you are about to make your LED display purchase, you are probably aware about its basics and have made your decision about size, color and so on. Let us go a little more into detail with regard to the pixel resolution of an LED and discuss how it affects the price of the sign.

The actual cost of an LED display depends on exactly how many individual LEDs are used on the sign. The costs of all other components are relatively irrelevant compared to the cost of LEDs used.

If you are looking at two different LED display brands, both with a 32×96 pixel matrix and are priced relatively close, how do you decide which one to purchase? The important thing to look at here is how many LEDs are in each pixel. Referring back to the basics, pixels are a group of individual LEDs. Therefore, if one brand has 4 LEDs per pixel, then you are getting a total of 12288 LEDs while the other brand displaying 8 LEDs per pixel is giving you 24576 LEDs in total.

The density of LEDs on an LED sign board tells you about the performance of the LED. A higher density means better the performance and a brighter sign. This is crucial because if the sign is not bright enough, readers will be unable to understand the message displayed on it.

Another reason why LED density is important is degradation. An LED display loses 20% of its brightness after it has been used for about 2000 hours (roughly 3 months). After this period, the brightness declines at a very slow rate over its life of about 10-11 years. These details are important to keep in mind when selecting your brand of LED display.

Lastly, consider the viewing angle of a sign. An individual LED could either release a single narrow beam of light or could display a wide beam to light up a room. Regardless of the type, the amount of light released is the same.  Therefore, if you want a better viewing angle for viewing from far away and angled distances, it is better to choose the LEDs that produce a wide beam.
